Gaze in awe at more than 20,000 expertly arranged chrysanthemums in Longwood’s four-acre conservatory during the Chrysanthemum Festival. Longwood’s experts have trained these fall favorites, creating cascades of color that drape the Conservatory walls like flowery waterfalls, serving as the largest display of exhibition chrysanthemums in the country.
The centerpiece of the festival is Longwood’s coveted Thousand Bloom chrysanthemum, made up of more than 1,500 meticulously arranged yellow flowers on one plant.
The idea and method for growing the Thousand Bloom Mum (known in Japan as Ozukuri) was introduced in Japan and China more than 200 years ago and is the most difficult of all the chrysanthemum training styles. The growing technique involves a whopping 15- to 18-month process with a ton of detailed care required to arrange the blooms in a perfect dome shape.
You can see Longwood’s famous blooming Chrysanthemums flourish in the palatial Conservatory.
Come prepared with comfortable shoes and leave yourself ample time to take in as much of Longwoods’ 300 acres as possible.
